Suspended Google listing: a guide for lawyers

Is your law firm no longer showing up on Google Maps? Has your Google Business Profile been suspended without a clear explanation? You're not alone — and it's probably not your fault.

Lawyers are among the liberal professions most affected by Google suspensions. The main reason: the frequent use of registered addresses, shared offices, and secondary offices.

What needs to be done immediately:

  1. Do not change anything on your profile
  2. Identify the cause : address, shared office, duplicate with a partner
  3. Gather your evidence : professional card, professional certificate, lease
  4. Submit a solid appeal with an impeccable record

Average wait time for a lawyer: 7 to 21 days depending on the complexity (home address = longer delay).

Why lawyers are being specifically targeted

Google does not target lawyers as a profession. However, the typical characteristics of a law firm often trigger spam filters:

  • Registered address Many lawyers practice from business centers or shared workspaces.
  • Shared offices Multiple lawyers at the same address = multiple records = suspicion of duplicates
  • Secondary offices A single entry per city of intervention can resemble local spam.
  • Optimized names : "Divorce Lawyer Paris 16" looks like a spammer's tactic

These practices are perfectly legitimate for a lawyer, but the Google algorithm does not differentiate between them and networks of fraudulent listings.

To understand all the suspension mechanisms, consult our complete guide to the causes of Google suspension.

The 6 most frequent reasons for lawyer suspension

1. Registered address or business center

This is the number 1 cause. If your firm is located in a space where 50 other companies are registered (Regus, Multiburo, etc.), Google suspects a "list farm".

It doesn't matter if you actually receive your clients there — for Google, it's a red flag.

2. Several lawyers at the same address

Do you share your premises with other colleagues? Does each have their own Google listing? Google may consider these to be duplicates and suspend one or more listings.

This is particularly common in group practices or lawyers' houses.

3. Multiple branch offices

Do you have one listing for your main office in Paris and another for your temporary offices in Versailles? Google may interpret this as an attempt to manipulate local search results.

4. Incorrect record name

Names accepted by Google:

  • ""Cabinet Dupont" ✓
  • ""Marie Dupont - Attorney" ✓
  • ""SCP Dupont & Associés" ✓

The names that trigger a suspension:

  • ""Cheap Divorce Lawyer in Paris" ✗
  • ""Best Business Law Attorney in Lyon" ✗
  • ""Dupont Law Firm - 24-Hour Emergency Criminal Lawyer" ✗

5. Incorrect main category

Your specialty is family law, but you've chosen "Lawyer" as your main category and added 8 secondary categories? Google may consider that you're trying to rank for too many queries.

6. Inconsistency with the Order's website

Google sometimes verifies information with official directories. If your address on the Google listing doesn't match the one registered with the professional body, it's a red flag.

⚠️ Business address or shared workspace?

These situations require a strengthened case with specific evidence. A poorly prepared appeal will be systematically rejected.

The essential evidence for a lawyer

Google wants to make sure you're a real lawyer, actually practicing at the address you provide. Here's what makes the difference:

Official professional documents

  • Lawyer's professional card (key element)
  • Certificate of registration with the Bar Association
  • Extract from the Kbis register or INSEE certificate of the firm
  • Certificate of professional liability insurance (RCP)

Proof of practice at the address

  • Commercial lease or registered office agreement
  • Business center invoices in your name
  • Official correspondence received at this address (Order, Court)
  • Landlord's certificate confirming your presence

Visual evidence

  • Photo of the professional plaque with your name
  • Photo of the building/office entrance
  • Photo of your office (if you receive clients on-site)
  • Photo of the waiting or reception room
  • Google Street View capture if the office is visible

Evidence of notoriety

  • Profile in the Bar Association directory
  • Website with full legal notices
  • Professional LinkedIn Profile
  • Legal articles or publications in your name
  • Mentions in the press or legal directories (Village de la Justice, etc.)

How to draft an appeal when you are a lawyer

As a lawyer, you know how to write. But the Google appeal is not a legal argument — it's a factual demonstration.

Here is an effective model:

""I am a lawyer registered with the Bar Association of [city] under number [BAR/number]. My office is located at [full address] where I receive my clients by appointment. The attached documents attest to my professional practice: lawyer's card, Bar Association certificate, professional lease and photos of my plaque and premises.""

If you are using a registered office address, add:

""My firm is located within [name of business center] where I have a private office to receive my clients. The business address agreement and the service provider's invoices are attached to the file.""

The complete appeal procedure is explained on Our guide to reactivating a suspended Google listing.

Errors that prevent reactivation

🚫 Create a new profile
You lose your reviews and your seniority. Google detects the duplicate and may suspend both listings.

🚫 Overusing your title in the entry name
""Maître Dupont" is acceptable. "Maître Dupont Avocat Spécialiste Divorce Pension Alimentaire Paris" is not.

🚫 Add secondary offices without a physical presence
If you do not have a sign, a fixed office, and do not receive clients at this address, do not create a listing.

🚫 Ask colleagues or customers to leave reviews quickly
A spike in reviews during a suspension is detected as manipulation.

🚫 Ignore the verification video call
If Google offers you a video verification, prepare your premises: visible sign, professional office, accessible documents.

Reactivation times for a lawyer

Delivery times vary greatly depending on your address:

  • Office with its own premises 5-10 days
  • Shared office with colleagues 10-14 days
  • Business center address 14-21 days
  • Complex case (duplicate, previous refusal, video call): 3-5 weeks

Every day without a listing = potential customers calling a colleague who is visible on Google.

More details on our reactivation timeframe page.

Special case: practice shared between several lawyers

A common situation: you practice in a group practice with 3 or 4 colleagues. Each has their own Google listing. Google suspends one of them for "duplicate".

How to prove that these are not duplicates:

  • Every lawyer must have their own professional card
  • Each record must have a different telephone number (direct line).
  • Ideally, each lawyer has their own website or dedicated page
  • The displayed specialties should be different if possible

In your appeal, explicitly state: "Our firm comprises X independent lawyers practicing individually. Each lawyer has their own clientele, their own telephone line and their own professional liability insurance.""

Special case: multiple practice addresses

Do you have your main office in Paris and hold regular office hours in Versailles?

Google rule: You can only have a record for the addresses where you receive really clients, with a regular physical presence.

What is allowed:

  • Main office with plaque and customer reception → OK
  • Secondary office with regular presence (e.g., 2 days/week) and nameplate → OK record

What is not allowed:

  • Address of a court where you are pleading your case
  • Address of a colleague with whom you have occasional consultations
  • Fictitious address to "cover" a geographic area

Why hire an expert?

You plead complex cases every day. But Google Business Profile rules are another matter entirely — and mistakes are costly in terms of visibility.

What I do for you:

  • Accurate diagnosis of the cause of suspension
  • Checking your listing's compliance with Google's rules
  • Customized list of evidence to provide
  • Drafting the call according to Google's criteria
  • Submission and tracking until reactivation
